While it is a public holiday with schools and offices closed, the festivities typically last only one day. Let’s explore the characteristics of Christmas in Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n

Christmas atmosphere in Korea<\/h2>\n

Christmas in Korea may not be as widely celebrated as in Western countries, but that doesn’t mean it goes unnoticed. After Halloween, shops, and especially coffee shops, immediately replace their <\/span>decorations<\/b> with those for Christmas. Sometimes, you might even find places where both sets of decorations are displayed together for a short period. However, don’t expect to see Christmas lights everywhere. Nevertheless, you can usually find <\/span>Christmas trees<\/b> in main shopping regions.<\/span><\/p>\n

The concept of Christmas in Korea is primarily divided into two categories: as a couple’s celebration or as a religious holiday for Christians to be spent with family.<\/span><\/p>\n

A second Valentine’s day?<\/b><\/h3>\n

For most Koreans, similar to Japanese, Christmas is seen as a <\/span>couple’s holiday<\/b>, akin to a second Valentine’s Day<\/a>. If you are in a relationship<\/a>, you will likely spend Christmas day romantically with your significant other. To reach the height of romance, many Koreans try to coincide the <\/span>100th day of their relationship <\/b>with Christmas. In a relationship, reaching 100 days together is considered a special occasion before the anniversary. This is why September 17 is called <\/span>Gobaek day<\/span><\/i> (\uace0\ubc31\ub370\uc774, <\/span>Confession Day<\/span><\/i>). On this day, if you confess your feelings to the person you like, and if successful, the 100th day of your relationship will coincide with Christmas.<\/span><\/p>\n

Religious Celebration<\/b><\/h3>\n

Despite Buddhism being the most prevalent religion in Korea, around 30% of the population is Christian (mostly Protestant). This segment of the population, therefore, celebrate Christmas in Korea as a <\/span>religious occasion<\/b> by attending church services and spending the rest of the day with their family. However, being a Christian doesn’t preclude a Korean from celebrating the day with their partner after the church ceremony. Single and non-Christian Koreans typically spend Christmas with their family or friends. For those who want to spend a fun Christmas in Korea, t<\/span>here are many activities to do<\/strong>, including shopping (\uc1fc\ud551\ud558\ub2e4, shoping hada<\/em>), ice skating (\uc544\uc774\uc2a4 \uc2a4\ucf00\uc774\ud305, aiseu seukeiting<\/em>) and going to the movies (\uc601\ud654\uad00\uc5d0 \uac00\ub2e4, yeonghwakwane gada<\/em>).<\/p>\n

As for <\/span>Christmas gifts<\/b>, they are not always exchanged. However, if invited to someone’s home, a Christmas cake or other food items or necessities are usually exchanged. Couples, on the other hand, often exchange special gifts.<\/span><\/p>\n

Christmas food in Korea<\/h2>\n

Since Christmas in Korea is an imported holiday and not a traditional holiday, there are no special dishes to be eaten during this day. One eats good or bad everyday food, such as soups<\/strong> (\uad6d, guk<\/em>), noodles<\/strong> (\uba74, myeon<\/em>) or grilled meat <\/strong>(\uace0\uae30, gogi<\/em>). This is always accompanied by the ever-present banchan<\/em> (\ubc18\ucc2c), the Korean side dishes , among which kimchi<\/em> (\uae40\uce58) and rice (\ubc25, bap<\/em>) are always present. The only course in which there is anything special dedicated to this holiday is dessert. Indeed, it features a cake with Christmas decorations<\/strong>, usually made of sugar paste, and is simply called Christmas cake<\/em> (\ud06c\ub9ac\uc2a4\ub9c8\uc2a4 \ucf00\uc774\ud06c, keuriseumaseu keikeu<\/em>).<\/p>\n

As for the Korean New Year, however, there is one dish that can never be missed on Korean tables on that day. It is tteokguk<\/em> (\ub5a1\uad6d), a soup made of rice dumplings<\/strong> sliced into strips, shaped like coins. Eating tteokguk is said to bring good luck and wealth for the new year and more: eating it also makes you one year older.<\/p>\n

How to wish Merry Christmas in Korea<\/h2>\n

Wishing Merry<\/em> Christmas<\/em> in Korea is simple because they use the English expression Merry Christmas<\/em>:<\/p>\n

The most important New Year in Korea is actually the lunar<\/strong> New Year , called Seollal<\/a> (\uc124\ub0a0), but this does not mean that the solar New Year (\uc0c8\ud574, saehae<\/em>) is not also celebrated. Typical New Year’s Eve celebration activities are fireworks (\ubd88\uaf43, bulkkot<\/em>), traveling (\uc5ec\ud589\ud558\ub2e4, yeohaenghada<\/em>) or attending exclusive parties (\ud30c\ud2f0\ud558\ub2e4, patihada<\/em>) during New Year’s Eve (\uc5f0\ub9d0, yeonmal<\/em>).<\/p>\n
