It is a dessert consisting of a base of crushed ice to which various toppings are added and is in a way comparable to shaved ice.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several <\/span><b>types of bingsu<\/b>. I<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">f you want to find out what they are, keep reading this article!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The history of the Korean shaved ice<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let&#8217;s start first with the history of bingsu. It first appeared during the Joseon Dynasty through trade with China, where people used to <\/span><b>mix ice and fruit<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lower their body temperature during hot days, creating a dessert named<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> baobing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In particular, government officials began to enjoy mixing ice and sweet beans or fruit, and gradually the dessert became common among the rest of the people as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initially coarse crushed ice was used, but it was later replaced with much finer, <\/span><b>snow-like<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> pieces of ice. Today&#8217;s bingsu is often served in very large portions, designed to be shared by two people or more, and includes various types of toppings.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>The most popular types of bingsu<\/h2>\n<h3>The pat bingsu<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The classic and longtime favorite bingsu is the one with<\/span><b> red bean(usually served as red bean paste)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\ud31f, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pat<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and is called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pat bingsu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\ud31f \ube59\uc218). It is also often decorated with small <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tteok<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which are pieces of glutinous rice cake. It is simply shaved ice topped with chunks of mango and mango syrup. It is among the most popular along with pat bingsu.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The tiramisu bingsu<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tiramisu bingsu <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(\ud2f0\ub77c\ubbf8\uc218 \ube59\uc218) is the <\/span><b>bingsu with either tiramisu cream topping<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or cheesecake cubes in this flavor. Of course, we cannot expect the exact same taste as Italian tiramisu, but we can say that it comes very close and it is a dessert that is an excellent fusion of the two cultures.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The choco bingsu<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As can be guessed from the name, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">choco bingsu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\ucd08\ucf54 \ube59\uc218) comes together with <\/span><b>chocolate<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They are a popular fruit in Korea, which is why bingsu with strawberry topping is also one of the most widely consumed. However, the strawberries usually found on bingsu are frozen and turn out a bit icy even when served. The idea is to make everything cold and icy, but those expecting fresh fruit may not be completely satisfied.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>The nokcha bingsu<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Koreans love <\/span><b>green tea<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, so this variation of bingsu, called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nokcha bingsu<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (\ub179\ucc28 \ube59\uc218), is also a must. Typically, in this variant the green tea is already dissolved in snow ice, which, instead of being white as usual, is green. There are many other types of bingsu: with ice cream, with blueberries, with cereal, with cheesecake-style cheese cubes, and <\/span><b>so on<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
