Many <\/span><b>festivals and events<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are organized in Korea, and some of them are very special. One of the most popular destinations is Pyeongchan (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud3c9\ucc2c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), where the 2018 Winter Olympics were held.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another interesting event is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.narafestival.com\/ice_eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hwacheon Sancheoneo Ice Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud654\ucc9c\ucc9c\uc5b4\uc81c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), which takes place in Hwacheon throughout most of January. Among the event&#8217;s most well known activity is <\/span><b>fishing for trout with your bare hands<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> through holes dug in the frozen lake \u2013 this is done in shorts and short sleeves! During the festival, it is also possible to try other activities\u00a0 such as the ice slide and bobsleighing.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>February<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">February may see celebrations for <a href=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/en\/blog\/seollal-the-korean-new-year\/\">Seollal<\/a>, the Lunar New Year, but the date varies from year to year, so sometimes it falls in January and sometimes in February.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Events throughout the year in Korea include the <\/span><b>Herb Island Light Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud5c8\ube0c\uc544\uc77c\ub79c\ub4dc<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ubd88\ube5b\ub3d9\ud654\ucd95\uc81c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in February in Pocheon, a few kilometers from Seoul. In the evening, the town lights up with colourful lights and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cheerful<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">decorations. This event continues to take place at other times of the year, but February is the most popular month. If you go to Pocheon, you can also take the opportunity to visit the Pocheon Art Valley, a striking rock formation overlooking a clear body of water where many dramas have been filmed, including <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Korean Odyssey<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ud654\uc720\uae30<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27540 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Tulip-festival-in-Korea.png\" alt=\"Tulip festival, one of the events throughout the year in Korea\" width=\"798\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>March<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March, a <strong>marathon<\/strong> is held in Seoul, attracting many participants every year. There is a full <\/span><b>marathon<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 42.2 kilometers starting from <a href=\"https:\/\/cherrymarathon.co.kr\/english\/index03.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gwanghwamun Square<\/a> and ending at the Seoul Sports Complex Olympic Stadium, and a mini-marathon of 10 kilometers starting at the Olympic Park and ending at the same destination. Visit the<a href=\"http:\/\/en.seoul-marathon.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> official marathon website here for Seoul\u00a0<\/a>and here for <a href=\"http:\/\/marathon.busan.com\/en_info1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Busan<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first spring festivals also begin, taking place in various locations and celebrating the first flowers of the year. In March, for example, you can participate in various <\/span><b>tulip festivals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The\u00a0<\/span><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jeju Fire Festival<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is held in March every year. Following a Korean tradition called <em>bangae<\/em> (\ubc18\uac1c), an agricultural process of burning down the fields to exterminate pests and allow the greens to regenerate. This award-winning festival is one of the most popular attractions in Jeju. Located at the Saebyeol Volcanic Cone, you can expect a spectacular view when bangae takes place.<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Towards the end of the month, you can also take part in the <strong>Nonsan Strawberry Festival,<\/strong><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0during which you can sample <\/span><b>local strawberries<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and take part in themed cooking classes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>April<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In April, the actual <\/span><b>spring festivals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start to become numerous and attract crowds of people. This is the period when the <\/span><b>cherry blossoms<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are in bloom and various festivals are held in the various parks where cherry blossoms are present. Among these are the Yeouido Festival in Seoul (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc5ec\uc758\ub3c4<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ubd04\uaf43\ucd95\uc81c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and the Seogwipo Festival in Jeju (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc81c\uc8fc<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc655\ubc9a\uaf43\ucd95\uc81c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also noteworthy is the <\/span><b>Jindo Miracle Sea Road Festival <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc9c4\ub3c4\uc2e0\ube44\uc758\ubc14\ub2f7\uae38\ucd95\uc81c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Once a year, the strip of land separating the island of Jindo from the peninsula resurfaces due to a lowering of the tide and can be crossed on foot.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Buddha&#8217;s birthday<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> celebrations also take place between April and May, depending on when it falls on the lunar calendar. Celebratory lanterns are set up everywhere, but the Daegu Lantern Festival, during which lanterns are thrown into the sky, is of particular note.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-56721 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Roses.png\" alt=\"Rose festival is one of the events throughout the year in Korea\" width=\"798\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Roses.png 798w, https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Roses-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Roses-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>May<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In May, the spring festivals are not over yet, with the <\/span><b>Rose Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being one of them. One of the many festivals is Everland, the famous amusement park in Yongin, not far from Seoul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another interesting festival among the events throughout the year in Korea is the <\/span><b>Boseong Green Tea Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ubcf4\uc131\ub2e4\ud5a5\ub300\ucd95\uc81c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). This festival allows visitors to admire the verdant green tea fields of Beoseong and take part in activities such as themed exhibitions, leaf-picking and tea-making.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the end of May, Busan hosts the <\/span><b>Centum Beer Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where you can drink plenty of beer and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">soju<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, play games to win glasses, and watch short musical performances. Interestingly, a black bag will be provided at the entrance in case you overdo it!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Read our article on drinking culture in Korea here.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>June<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In June, one of the most impressive events throughout the year in Korea is the <\/span><b>Danoje Festival in Gangneung<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is an event where you can watch ancient rituals, traditional dances and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ssireum<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uc528\ub984<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), a kind of Korean masked wrestling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This festival is considered a UNESCO cultural heritage site. It is held on the occasion of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dano<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\ub2e8\uc624<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), the 50th day of the lunar calendar.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-56728 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beach.png\" alt=\"Beach events throughout the year in Korea\" width=\"798\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beach.png 798w, https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beach-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/Beach-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>July<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most famous event in July that attracts people from all over Korea every year is the <\/span><b>Boryeong Mud Festival<\/b>. It&#8217;s an<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0event during which people dive into the mud and play various games. Not recommended for those who don&#8217;t like getting dirty!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another popular July event for young people is the <\/span><b>Sinchon Watergun Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which takes place in Seoul and involves shooting each other with water guns in the streets of Sinchon district. This event usually lasts<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0an entire weekend.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>August\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">August sees the <\/span><b>Incheon Pentaport Rock Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the nation&#8217;s best-known rock event.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also know that Koreans love spicy food, which is why the <\/span><b>Goesan Chili Pepper Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\uad34\uc0b0\uace0\ucd94\ucd95\uc81c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) takes place at the end of August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27558 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Suwon-in-Korea.png\" alt=\"Suwon where some events throughout the year in Korea take place\" width=\"798\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>September<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A very special September event is the <\/span><b>Wonju Dynamic Dancing Carnival,<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0a long masked parade that takes place in the city of Wonju. During the event, one has the opportunity to see both traditional and modern masks and dances, or the two styles fused together.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Between September and October, the <\/span><b>Suwon Hwaseong Cultural Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also begins, during which historical performances are staged at the Hwaseong Fortress.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>October<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the lunar calendar, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/en\/blog\/korean-thanksgiving\/\"><b>Chuseok<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2013 the autumn festival also known as Korean Thanksgiving \u2013 may fall in September or October.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.biff.kr\/eng\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Busan International Film Festival<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (<\/span><b>the first Korean film festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> which plays a big role in the Asian film industry) is also held in Busan every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Halloween<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> night is also celebrated as one of the popular events throughout the year in Korea. Generally, the celebrations take place over two weekends in a row and the area where the event is most popular is the Itaewon district in Seoul.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>November<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In November, Korea starts to light up with Christmas decorations, but that&#8217;s not all. In Seoul, the <\/span><b>Seoul Lantern Festival<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is held in the central area, during which large lanterns in a variety of shapes decorate the Cheongyecheon stream and its surroundings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-27567 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/gogohanguk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Christmas-deco-in-Korea.png\" alt=\"Christmas illuminations during events throughout the year in Korea\" width=\"798\" height=\"449\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><b>December<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once November&#8217;s Seoul Lantern Festival is over, Cheongyecheon&#8217;s decorations are replaced with bright, <\/span><b>colourful Christmas-themed lanterns<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While Christmas wasn&#8217;t a big thing in Korea until a few years ago, it is now becoming increasingly important, especially on the consumer and decorative side.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hope you enjoyed our month-by-month overview of events throughout the year in Korea.
