Established in 2002, Dongguk University’s Institute of International Language offers a comprehensive Korean language program comprising of six proficiency levels, cultural experiences, and a global buddy program. Our dedicated faculty utilizes a well-structured curriculum based on Dongguk University’s Korean textbook, fostering a deep understanding of Korean language and culture. Completion of level 4 opens doors to Dongguk University’s undergraduate program, bypassing the need for TOPIK level 4. You are able to join supplementary classes, pronunciation classes, and TOPIK Ⅱ prep classes in order to improve your Korean skills fast and strive towards your own language goals.
Every March and September, Level 3 and higher students are offered a global buddy program which pairs Korean language students with Korean university students at Dongguk. You will have the opportunity to practice Korean and learn more about Korean culture with your buddy. A certain level of Korean is required for the buddy program.
An electronic textbook developed by Dongguk will be provided and a computer or tablet is required for the class. Additional printed learning materials besides the electronic textbook can be provided except the e-textbook.
Once per term all Korean language students will have a cultural activity with their teachers. Also, since Dongguk is a Buddhist university, optional Buddhism-related activities will be provided on and off campus.
Depending on attendance and academic scores, students can receive a 30% discount, 10% discount, or a KRW 100,000 discount off the follow term’s tuition. You must register for 2 terms or more to qualify for these rewards.
One of the best parts of being a student is the student dorm – the school operates dormitories which are all close to the school, making them one of the cheapest and most convenient options for student housing.
Upon request, the school will provide counseling with a psychological counselor to improve a student’s mental health during their studies.
Students will be able to join student clubs.

The Korean course at the institute is structured into six comprehensive levels, ranging from fundamental to advanced proficiency. Leveraging the specially designed Korean textbooks crafted by Dongguk University, the curriculum is meticulously organized, fostering a seamless integration of language comprehension and expression for students. Each class typically accommodates approximately 15 international students, fostering an engaging and interactive learning environment. With four terms offered annually, each term is 3 months long and is enriched with one cultural activity, enabling students to immerse themselves in the Korean culture alongside their language studies.

The total costs include the application fee (KRW 100,000) and the tuition. The application fee is not refundable. Other cost details are below:
• Completely read and write Korean consonants and vowels.
• Understand basic sentence structure, tense expression and rules of verb and adjective usage.
• Acquire basic language skills required for daily life such as greeting, self introduction, purchasing, using transportation, and calling.
• Communicate about daily life without inconvenience.
• Express own opinions about private and familiar social subjects orally as well as written.
• Explain, describe, compare, and deliver language in an appropriate situation.
• Smooth expression using Korean passive and indirect speech.
• Understand and express one’s thoughts on social and current events based on learned grammar.
• Understand and properly use the basic differences and characteristics of formality/non-formality and literary/colloquial style.
• Deepen one’s understanding of Korean society and culture by learning idioms and proverbs.
• Understand Korean political, economic, social, cultural, and other professional fields and logically express opinions about them.
• Choose and use an appropriate expression in diverse and complicated situations.
• Achieve skills required to study in a degree course such as writing a thesis, critical analysis, giving speeches, and discussions.
• Use Korean grammar freely and participate in professional activities.
• Concretely figure out the content of editorials, news reports, professional articles, literature, and broadcasts.
• Understand the Korean way of thinking and customs; having no trouble in most activities and expressions throughout Korean language.
